OK, I have gone back and rechecked my earlier observations on Opera. I can reload the applet on the same page without problems. However, when I go to a new page, I have no applet. I thought I had checked that earlier, but obviously not.
The tutorials that use two instances of the applet on the same page, behave the same way -- both work and can be reloaded multiple times -- but moving to a different page kills the applet.
Furthermore, in any of these cases, doing a reload on the original page in which the applet is present, results in no applet.
So Opera is not working.
