hi,

restrict is a RasMol/Chime compatible command, which means it is important that 
it function as it does in RasMol/Chime.

that said, I would be interested in discussing a Jmol-specific method of 
controlling the display.  maybe some pair of commands like show and hide:

# this shows protein in spacefill, current method
#
select protein
spacefill 100%
color cpk

# this hides protein from view but 'remembers' the format
#
hide protein

# this restores protein to last format; i.e., spacefill
#
show protein


this requires Jmol to store format for each atom, and I don't know how 
difficult that would be to implement.  but it would certainly add a very nice, 
more intuitive (for some) command for controlling the display.
