As I recall, it was test code that I was working on to try to have some mechanism to determine when the applet was fully loaded and 'ready'.
My recollection is that the experiment failed ... I was unable to come up with something that worked across all JavaScript/JVM platforms. So I gave up in disgust ... and apparently left the test code in place.
