hi all, There is a known problem with the Apple JVM after upgrading to 10.3.9. I thought it might be helpful to provide some specific info for Jmol users who are running OS X. this is what you may see if you have this problem and you use Jmol:
1. Jmol works fine when first accessed, but fails on subsequent tries. 2. Jmol fails on any attempt. 3. Safari crashes when hitting a Jmol page. 4. failure of Jmol may be accompanied by a slew of Java errors to Console.app. this issue is documented in Apple's Knowledge Base here: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301380> and here is a summary of the solution (my distillation): 1. BACKUP ALL FILES. 2. run the Java 1.4.2 Updater. if your Java installation is ok, the updater will not allow you to continue. this is ok; just quit the Updater and go on to step 3. 3. run the Security Update 2005-002. 4. restart, repair permissions, and restart again. (there is some debate about the utility of this step, but I have never found it to harmful.) both of the Updates are available from the kbase article link provided above. hope this helps, tim -- Timothy Driscoll molvisions - see, grasp, learn. <http://www.molvisions.com/> usa:north carolina:raleigh "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one." - Albert Einstein ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: New Crystal Reports XI.
