well, that's what view.htm yesterday on my machine yesterday. Here's what I have for Lesson 3:

3. The Mac OS 10.3.8 appears to be unique in handling <applet> tags. You can't
reliably used document.getElementById().script() with this system. Instead, you
have to use the name=elementname and the document[elementname].script()
convention to access the scripting. Other systems don't seem to have this
problem. But the point is, access to scripting should not assume one or the
other method will automatically work. Of course, using Jmol.js should take care
of this, because as reports come in, it will be the first thing fixed to handle
odd browser characteristics.

I can check again to see. I've put up a page that does just those changes:

http://www.stolaf.edu/people/hansonr/jmol/docs/examples/moveto_byid.htm

The links at the bottom left of the page are the ones to try.
I will check this tomorrow on that Mac 10.3.8 that seemed to require NOT using document.getElementById()

Can you describe again what the different behavior you observe is between
the web-based one and the one you modified? Could you please put up the
changed version somewhere so we could compare? That could be really useful.

in a rush, but had to fire this off:

all I did was modify showscript to say document.getElementById("jmol").script
instead of document.jmol.script, and I added id="'+name+'" to getApplet().

more later - sorry...
