I believe that this reference was referring to a business like Warren
DeLano has with PyMOL, open source software + commercial licensing revenue
for support and custom development.

The Jmol code is licensed under LGPL and will remain that way.

The LGPL would allow one to structure a system where they built
proprietary code around the Jmol core, using Jmol as the viewer. Only
changes to the Jmol code itself would be covered and would need to made
public available for contribution to the Jmol project.
