Hi
My organic chemistry site has equivalent Chime and Jmol versions that were put in place late last year. A few months ago, Tim expressed an interest in usage statistics from the two versions, and I can now provide these for the period of Jan. 14th to April 29th. Unfortunately, our server software records only total page hits and does not correct for unique users or multiple hits by the same user in a single visit. Consequently, the daily average of 8500 hits is vastly inflated, but the browser and OS statistics may be significant.
Over 95% of the access is to the Chime version of the text, and this is largely from Windows platforms (84.5%) running Internet Explorer (75.5%). Macintosh usage is only 2.8% with Safari accounting for 1.2% (all percentages are for total hits).
The Jmol version received 3.8% of the total hits. Of these 51% were from Windows platforms running I.E. (36%). Macintosh users only account for 2.9% of the Jmol site hits, with Safari being 1.4%. Netscape and Firefox account for roughly 14% of the Jmol hits.
Two facts should be kept in mind when evaluating these data. First, the Chime version has been on the web for over five years, and the Jmol version has just appeared. Second, this site is not devoted primarily to molecular visualization. There are over 50 models within the text, but they are scattered about at appropriate places.
