I am finding that this solid rendering does the trick. It enables one to show interior regions of differing physico-chemical properties such as hydrophobicity, and interior channels and cavities quite clearly. The one-dimensionality of the sliced atoms when past the halfway point (referred to by Miguel) is a small price to pay, if it is a price at all.
