Perhaps we can figure it out. > The jmol demonstration site does not work for me (it used to) I get the > message: > > You do not have Java applets > enabled in your web browser. > Install the Java Runtime Environment > from www.java.com > and/or enable Java applets in > your web browser preferences > > On the other hand Jmol sites such as > > http://www-mslmb.niddk.nih.gov/hurley/pdb/jmol_ip3k_1tzd.html > > http://www.ub.es/dpfisii/recursos/apoptosis/jmol/caspasas/page1.html > > work fine. > > I run a fully updated native XP system - similar I guess to most other > non jmol specialists (i.e. I have not installed any extra java on this > machine) It is not clear to me which browser you are using. I assume that you are running MSFT Internet Explorer. Most Windows XP systems have not shipped with the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. In 2001 MSFT dropped support for their JVM, and announced that it would not be part of Windows XP. However, the JVM was available via the web through WindowsUpdate for a brief period of time after that. My theory is that you have one of the (relatively) few *XP* systems that *do* have the Microsoft JVM. So, I assume that you are running Internet Explorer with the Microsoft JVM. The next release of Jmol will require Java 1.4 or better. The Microsoft JVM is stuck at version 1.1 ... from around 1998. Therefore, the next release of Jmol will not support the Microsoft JVM. If you go to www.java.com you can easily download a modern Java implementation that should support all current and future versions of Jmol.
