Probably not, but I don't know the details of jmolgetpropertyasarray.
What I was suggesting is in the realm of the scripting language, 
where sidechain and backbone are recognized tokens.
If you could combine both languages, a test could be set. But maybe 
my imagination is taking me too far :-/  ; I cannot see how such 
combination can be done.
What I see as feasible is a test for atom names; I suppose 
jmolgetpropertyasarray will give you the atom ID, so you can run a 
comparison with, say, indexOf("*") for pentose atoms.
