Yes, you were right! I used 10.2. I downloaded the 11beta, which 
apparently is version 10.9.47.

Hm, that's weird. It works in the version I'm running now.

Well, it's all working now, but I encountered another problem: I can't 
copy anything from the Jmol script console to my vi - hence I can't use 
the MOL coordinates. This looks like a Mac OS X problem, because I've also 
tried it on a Windows and a Linux machine where it works as usual. Does 
anybody know how to copy&paste from a Java programme to Mac's X11 or Mac 
OS X? If not, is it possible to direct the output to an external file or 
stdout? The latter would be my terminal since I started jmol from the 
command line.
