Philip, Bob, It is an unfortunate fact of life that some (many?) CIF parsers rely to some degree on an assumed ordering of dataitems in the CIF. Even the cif-checking software that does structure checking at the IUCr breaks in this regard! The only way to not have this problem is if the CIF is parsed in its entirety when it is first opened and then the calling program requests from the parser datavalues as it needs them. In this way all the information is available on demand and the order in the original CIF is irrelevent.
