Yes, it is only really needed if the symbol is not enclosed in 'quotes'.

Yes. But there were no explicit symmetry ops in these files. The H-M symbol was 
OK, but was not used when the Hall symbol followed it.

Bob, I will send you a problem file of-line. I have not fully examined CIFs 
produced by Crystallographica, but the _eof line seems to be standard and 
always throws Jmol.
