It would have helped if I'd used the correct file paths in ...
34 jmolApplet(400, 'load
.../../html/steve/Pub_health_structures/$structid.ent;');
doh!
Thanks for all the advice.
Steve

Subject: [Jmol-users] Error: Object expected
Hi there,
I've got a PERL script in /cgi-bin/steve/ which uses jmol and it's
throwing errors I can't diagnose when the page is rendered...
specifically:
Line: 34, 83, 123
Char: 6
Error: Object Expected
Code: 0
Nothing is displayed
I'm rendering several images in a single page, and lines 34, 83 & 123
are my jmolApplet line
33 <script type='text/javascript'>
34 jmolApplet(400, 'load
.../../html/steve/Pub_health_structures/$structid.ent;');
35 </script>
$structid is the PDB code which is parsed OK, and the file exists at the
relative location.
I'm pretty sure my headers & initialization are also OK
<html>
<head>
<title>Simple example</title>
<script src="../../html/steve/jmol-10.00/Jmol.js"
type="text/javascript"></script>
</head>
<body>
<table border=1>
<script type='text/javascript'>
jmolInitialize('../../html/steve/jmol-10.00');
</script>
....
Again the relative paths are definitely correct.
Jmol is capable of running on our server as I've got some PHP pages in
/html/steve/ that render Jmol perfectly.
We're running Fedora Core, Apache 2.0, Perl 5.8.8, Java 1.4.2 & PHP
5.1.6.
The weird thing is that this all worked fine when testing on my local
desktop (IIS on Windows XP). I realise that there are differences
between OS's & local/web deployment and I thought I had them covered...
obviously not.
This is driving me nuts. I've spent nearly all day trying various
combinations of filepaths & formatting, including <applet> & <object>
tags, all to no avail.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
