Nico has just released the development version 11.1.2.
This release has some interesting new commands associated with it.

New SET commands:

set cameraDepth x.xx
set hideNavigationPoint
set navigationDepth # in 11.1.2 use equivalent: navigate 0 DEPTH x.xx
set navigationMode TRUE/FALSE
set perspectiveStyle 11/10 # (10 disallows navigation)
set picking navigation
set rotationRadius x.xx
set showNavigationPointAlways
set visualRange x.xx

These settings determine various aspects of navigation that are
described more fully in the interactive documentation
http://www.stolaf.edu/academics/chemapps/jmol/docs

New show command:

show set

This shows all current settings.

The main new command is "navigate" (or "navigation"). With it you can
bring the user to whatever position in space you desire. Examples will
follow.

navigate nSec center {x y z}
navigate nSec center $object
navigate nSec center (atom selection)
navigate nSec depth p # a depth value, like slab, in percent (0 rear,
100 front)
navigate nSec path $object indexStart indexEnd
navigate nSec path (atom expr) {x y z} (atomexpr) (atomexpr) {x y z} etc...
navigate nSec path {x y z theta} {x y z theta}{x y z theta}{x y z theta}...
navigate nSec rotate X degrees
navigate nSec rotate Y degrees
navigate nSec rotate Z degrees
navigate nSec translate x.xx y.yy # percentages; 0 0 center
navigate nSec translate X x.xx # relative percent
navigate nSec translate Y y.yy # relative percent
navigate nSec translate {x y z}
navigate nSec translate $object # could be a draw object
navigate nSec translate (atom selection) #average of values

The nSec parameter is optional and defaults to 2 seconds. Commands can
be stacked together for convenience only using “/”:

navigate depth 20 / rotate X 30 / depth 20 / translate X 10

Note that “depth 20” after the rotation is different from “depth 20”
before – it is along a different axis. Also note that concurrent
spinning of the model, though possible, is not recommended during
navigation. Many of these commands depend upon the current model
orientation. If that is changed by the user or by spinning during
navigation, the end result is not guaranteed. In principal one could
safeguard against this, but we are not there yet.

In addition, an extension to the moveTo command allows simultaneous
reorienting and navigation:

moveTo [timeSec] {x y z w} zoom [xTrans yTrans]
({center}) [rotationRadius] ({navCenter}) [navX navY navDepth]

The basic sequence to using navigation is:

1) issue

set navigationMode

2) either use the keypad keys or

Navigation is more fully discussed in a technical document I've put
together summarizing the Jmol perspective and navigation model, which
can be found at
http://www.stolaf.edu/academics/jmol/docs/misc/navigation.pdf

I'll put together a demo page on navigation when I get the chance.
