Hi Jeff

I opened your page
http://people.depauw.edu/jhansen/Presentations/Jessica.html
in Firefox 1.5 (WinXP).
At the first attempt, neither the applet nor the buttons, links etc. show up
and I get an error in the _javascript_ console, saying
Error: illegal character
Source file: http://people.depauw.edu/jhansen/Presentations/JmolFolder/Jmol.js

This can be the problem, and I think the rest of your description may be due to caching of the applet or Jmol.js by the browser.
Also, I see that yor page looks for Jmol.js and applet in "JmolFolder" and for files in "jmolFolder" -the uppercase/lowercase may be conflictive, although that's not the problem now.

In Opera 9.20, the applet and controls do show up and work OK, even after page reload, and there is nothing in the error console. Stricking!

In IE7, the applet loads but only the first button in shown (no text in the right- hand panel). The TF molecule loads Ok. Same after page reload.

So, this looks like a minor error that is being ignored by some browsers but not by others (which is quite common).

Sorry I cannot locate the offending position in Jmol.js (my console only shows garbage characters). I suggest that you refresh your copy of the file.

By the way, if you update to Jmol 11.0.2, you may benefit from a template that makes the applet resizable automatically with the browser, so you can avoid the current fixed-size applet, the use of a table, and the double scrollbar on the right: see
http://wiki.jmol.org:81/index.php/Recycling_Corner#Dynamically_resized_panels_layout

Good luck!
