I notice from the Safari 3beta download page that in addition to
"Latest security updates" - how very Windows - there is a list of
"Coming Soons" which includes 'LiveConnect' support (already in
Safari 3 beta Mac as it's in Safari 2). This means (a) No point my
trying it at the moment, (b) Apple does, of course, intend to support
Java on Safari for the desktop, even if it does not build it into the
iPhone. I suspect the number of iPhone owners who will be
disappointed at not being able to run Jmol will be quite small.

On Steve Jobs and java applets. He's wrong and he's right. Java is
here to stay for a long while, but it's main sphere is not applets,
although it will continue to be supported on major operating systems
and in browsers. The dominant rich technology for the web will be
Ajax and the like, and the thrust in Safari is collaborating with
Google to make it easier for them to support Safari with Gears etc.
It suits Apple to restrict iPhone app development to the browsers -
they don't want tacky apps spoiling the look of the thing and
bringing it down.

As far as Java developers on the Mac are concerned, things are always
a bit marginal because Sun doesn't write a JVM for Apple and Apple
would prefer that developers used Cocoa. However, there is an active
Mac Java group, and Apple do provide developer support on their
website, so one just has to hope it will continue.
