Eric, try adding

set refreshing false
...
set refreshing true

around those script commands. It's possible that a careful investigation 
of your script will show us which command is doing the early refresh, 
and we might be able to fix it, but maybe not. There are various 
commands that cause a refresh, including just using "select visible", 
for instance. Without seeing the whole script I wouldn't be able to 
tell. The refreshing setting allows you to control this sort of thing 
and prevent display until you specifically want it.
