... seems to be one of "those" amd64 issues.
check out:

and refer to the chapter named "amd64: Installing the Mozilla/Firefox 
plugin". this should help afaik.

if you are getting annoyed with 64bit 32bit problems simply reinstall 
ubuntu 32bit (i did it - as long as you do not use extensive amounts of 
memory > 4gb you will not see any difference imho).
