Hmm. The export can be megabytes of data. But it's not impossible. The 
way it is set up, like special shapes, this is in a package of its own 
that would only be loaded if the user exercises it, so yes, not a real 
problem with the applet. However, I should note that before I set up a 
file output stream and instead used a StringBuffer, I was seeing out of 
memory issues. And the applet will not be able to use a file output 
stream unless it is signed; in my experience you might as well use the 
application in that case.

A second option would be for the applet/page to transmit the state to 
the server and let the Jmol application on the server, running in 
silent/frameless mode create the files and then deliver them back to the 
page. This seems to me to be a good alternative for something like 
JenaLib, where you can control the server and add functionality on that 
end.

Ah -- so then, as I say, just send the state and let the server run a 
server-side Jmol application. No need to send the POV-Ray code to the 
server, I think. This would be far more efficient.
