right, shouldn't make a difference. This works, ok for me at http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/docs/examples-11/new.htm, and I can't think of anything I've done recently in that area. If you can't track it down, let me know. To test, try that command from the Jmol console a few times. If it works there, then somehow your button is doing more than you think. You should also be seeing messages in the Java console as this command processes.
Also, you might want to try getproperty stateinfo modelstate to see if the connect command is showing up there or not.
