There should be a link below the image, saying "try alternative 
method". Does that work? (That is the one using PHP to process the 
image in the server.)

I tested up to 1000x1000 pixels with no problem.

Good idea. But how do you resize to an applet larger than the screen? 
Only by script, I guess.
