OK, it was a Jmol bug. A mistake reading the "compound document" format,
which was slightly different between these two files. It's a problem that
will affect reading of some Spartan '08 files and not others -- and this is
exactly what you saw, Dan.

It's fixed for Jmol 11.6.16 and Jmol 11.7.26. Look for 11.7.26 at
http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/docs/examples-11/Jmol-11.zip.
