I have corrected this bug for Jmol 11.7.35 and 11.6.23

Frame arrows in toolbar don't work for string data models.

This was a problem with the data command not behaving like the load command.
Now they both work the same. Note that this changes the effect of

  data "append" ....


in that the appended model, as for load append, becomes the displayed model.
