Well, I had to sit around all day waiting for my car to be fixed so I had time to work on this. Since I was already furthest along on an svg implementation I continued working on that. You can see where I'm at here:

Interestingly, in Safari the points on the graph do not appear until the mouse after the structure is loaded into Jmol (expected) and the mouse is moved (unexpected).
