does an opaque one, but probably as you noticed translucent goes to flat
ends.
So I guess I don't have a solution for you. Do they really have to be
rounded at the end?
draw width 3.0 {0 0 0} {20 20 20} color translucent fill nomesh
gets you an open tube with no end plates.
