It seems that was dropped in recent versions of the format; I have a local copy of pdbguide2.2 where for atom names they refer to Appendix 3, and there it is said COLUMN VALUE ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 13 - 14 Chemical symbol - right justified, except for hydrogen atoms After all, that's just atom name; element symbol is now in columns 79-80, so not such need to be very consistent. However, I'm sure the amino acids use standard atom names, so maybe they just omit the detail now but they still use it. This reminds me of the time when calcium and alpha carbons were mistaken!
