You might check to be sure the Firefox/Mac OSX is using Java 1.6:
http://www.duckware.com/pmvr/howtoincreaseappletmemory.html

Just load the applet and check the popup menu item "about...system...Java
version. If it doesn't say 1.6... then you can't use that memory increase
business.
