Yep, this is quite an annoying Java update from Apple. As far as I know,
rolling back to Java 6 isn't even possible, since Apple provided its own
versions of Java 6.

FYI, clearing the Java cache via System Preferences > Java also fixes problems
with Safari. Java in Chrome won't work because Chrome is 32-bit. Looking
forward to a mature JSmol… :-)

Cheers, Mike

Phil,

After the first update via auto update, Java is broken in Safari but not
Firefox. Also the Java control in Utilities is gone.

After suggested re-update via downloaded DMG file, same result. BUT I noticed
that the Java control is now in Settings under Other. This may have been the
case with the first update attempt, but I think I checked Settings, and I don't
remember seeing it. The settings in the Java control seem ok.

Rebooted machine. Java now works in Safari.

Editorial Comment: Cripes!

Best, Otis

Apple released a java "update" yesterday, the effect of which is to remove the
applet plug-in from your browsers and then force a download of the 1.6 version
from Oracle. Has any mac user done this and, if so, what have ben the results?
