I think that to cater for IE8 users providing a graceful alternative is indeed 
something to do. Righ now, there is just a blank square after a Javascript 
error that may or not be seen, depending on what the user has configured.

And remember that IE8 is the LATEST version offered if you happen to use WinXP. 
And XP, though old, is the system of choice in some corporate places, or if you 
have an oldie PC like me at the office.  I think IE8 may well be upadted from 
time to time with security patches.
But it's easy to check for that version.
