Thank you for your kind words. Jmol is a labor of love. Kind words such as
these keep it happening. Sorry for the delayed response. Just getting back
to email after several very intense days getting JSpecView running in pure
JavaScript (http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/jsmol/testjsv.htm and
http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/jsmol/testjsv_mol.htm) and adding my own
JavaScript version of a PDF creator to those as well. Whew!

Originally we thought it might be possible to have both worlds, but I'm not
so sure now. Certainly if the operating system CANNOT support Java applets
(iOS, Android) then you can check for that. But for all the other 90+% of
users (believe it or not), we have a problem. While they MIGHT be able to
use Java, will it be there? Do they have it enabled? Or will it be blocked?
Unfortunately, I don't know any way to check that automatically.

There's a real question as to whether there will be a Jmol Java applet in
2014. We'll see.

But while there is a significant performance hit with large systems and
surface creation, depending upon your needs, you may not have too much of a
problem with JSmol/HTML5. I'm recommending

 set platformSpeed 1

for faster performance during mouse/touch operations.
