On the other hand, in my experience linear color gradients may not 
look at all as you expect them to. Not a problem with white-to-red.

A few days ago I needed to make a few red-to-green rainbows (passing 
through yellow/orange, for a bad-to-good feeling, kind of traffic 
light symbolism), I found this site which was useful after I put 
aside RGB gradient and chose HSV gradient option:

As far as I recall, Jmol default roygb rainbow was designed adding 
some compensation to get better middle tones (green or yellow).
