For anyone using OS 10.9.2 Mavericks with Java 1.7.0_55, you might
want to know this.

I was trying to test Jmol's auto-detection of Java by unchecking or
checking, in the Java Control Panel Security tab, "Enable java
content in the browser".

After a few cycles, when I tried to check the checkbox and Apply, the
checkbox automatically unchecked itself, so I could not re-enable
Java. So I quit the Java Control Panel and attempted to restart it
(from System Preferences). I got the following bizzare message and
the Contol Panel did not appear.

"Insecure update error! For security reasons, you need to sign your
updates with a DSA key. See Sparkle's documentation for more information."

After scratching my head a bit, I uninstalled Java following the
instructions here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5491042

(There was no /Library/Oracle folder, nor any Oracle folder anywhere,
but otherwise the instructions were straightforward.)

After the safe boot and reboot, I downloaded and attempted to install
Java 1.7.0_55. On the first attempt, the installer reported FAILURE!
(with no explanation of course -- contact the manufacturer :)

Well, I just ran the installer again and it succeeded. Java works
(Jmol_S) and I can again open the Java Control Panel.

Interestingly, the Exception Site List in the Security Tab still
contains my personal exception list, so evidently not all traces of
Java were deleted!

Good luck, Eric
