JSmol can indeed display an image that will be replaced by the model when 
clicked on. That's a standard feature. However, that method still requires to 
load the JSmol core code when the page loads, which probably takes much more 
time and data than loading the model file, and so will not make much of a 
difference. For that, no need for changes in JSmol.

It is also possible and quite easy to write Javascrit code that will replace an 
image, a link, etc. with the JSmol object injected in the page at that 
(onClick) moment. But again, the JSmol.min.js code should normally have been 
loaded in advance (I don't know if it is possible to call and load an 
additional JS file when requested, later after page load)

Another option is to use Lightweight JSmol, which loads really fast although it 
has limited functionality and rendering.
