that mystery is easily solved. When I built the 14.4.1 I took a shortcut, and though it built 14.4.1, it left the property file 14.4.0, so it reported itself as 14.4.0 but was really 14.4.1, which was supposed to be no different except that one reference to setTimeout. Obviously that was a bad idea. Too late; too tired!
