Ah, exactly. I fell into "Hammurabi's Code" mode  there. Good point.

So this all gets back to my question about whether this is _your_
employer. If they're laying people off with no notice right and left, then
I'd say it's fine for you to leave without notice. You have a very
reasonable expectation that they won't uphold their responsibility to you,
and so you have none to them.
