THE FOUNDATION CENTER is the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide. Through data, analysis, and training we connect people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed. Our organization's mission is to strengthen the nonprofit sector by advancing knowledge about U.S. philanthropy. The Information Technology department is responsible for supporting and maintaining all of the Foundation Centers systems and networks at its NY headquarters and 4 field offices. This includes all hardware, network and software development. The IT department has grown considerably over the years from a staff of 3 in 1995 to over 15 today. The department is made up of Network services staff, Web services staff, Electronic Product support staff and Publishing services staff. PROGRAMMER Reports to: Application Development Manager Job summary: Provide application design and development support for Center's web sites. Maintain thorough documentation of all programs and procedures, develop and test software, integrate systems, and provide production support for all Foundation Center information systems and databases. Responsibilities: Design, develop, test, and debug user interface solutions for next generation web applications in an information rich context using advanced development tools such as PHP, XML, Javascript, Ajax, JQuery, and SQL . Participate in application design discussions. Work closely with other Center staff to perform analysis and produce functional as well as detail design specifications for projects. Maintain thorough documentation of all programs and procedures and participate in departmental best practices discussions. Work closely with network/systems staff to fulfill efficient and secure operations. Responsible for all quality assurance testing of newly developed programs. Develop and maintain user/system procedures for batch processing. Provide user production support by handling trouble calls. Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned. Work with other IT staff on team projects, leading when necessary. Requirements: BA/BS degree. Experience with one or more of the following programming languages and technologies required: XML, PHP, HTML/CSS, Javascript, and SQL. Familiarity with Java, Unix scripting, Python, C++, EZPublish, Subversion, Exalead or other search engines a plus. Experience creating, optimizing, and maintaining scalable, fast-growing, data-heavy web applications with user-generated content. Experience with relational database principles and object-oriented design concepts. Must be an organized, detail-oriented self-starter who works well independently as well in a team environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of staff and consultants. Must be available to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
