While not a mathemetician, I can certainly see the merit in defining intervals as they are commonly defined in mathematics.

Conversely, for the lay person, which most of the coding and code-using majority are regardless of exposure to the acedemia of it all, [9:00,9:00) being included in the [10:00,11:00) interval IS rather counter-intuitive.

However, it is fairly easy to refer someone to a resource (wikipedia or a set-theory text) in order to "set them straight" on exactly WHY that is the case.  The REASON it seems counter-intuitive is that the result of that interval has nothing to do with the defining attributes of the interval once it's been evaluated.

Actually, I refute the existence of the [9:00,9:00) interval, if it is defined in accordance with the general set definitions as I understand them and as we seem to agree that they are definied.  To clarify:
1. the square bracket is INCLUSIVE
2. the parenthesis is EXCLUSIVE
therefore, the interval [9:00,9:00) is both inclusive (on the left) and exclusive (on the right) and is therefore nonsensical.

I support the idea of preventing such an interval from being created.

If there is a case where such an interval is required, I would like to see the definition of how it is used.
Am I missing something?  If so, please help me understand what that is.

Actually, I like Al's definition. It effectively defines
[9:00, 9:00)  as  [9:00, 9:00.0000000000000000001)

The other definitions then fall out naturally, eg [9:00, 10:00)
contains [9:00, 9:00.0000000000000000001 )  etc

I believe [ is inclusive, ) is exclusive, so [9:00, 9:00) would be [9:00, 8:59:999999999999999999] which does not make sense.
