There is no guaranteed way to make this work, as midnight may not
exist on DST changing days. However, this may be slightly more
reliable:
localDate.toDateMidnight(DateTimeZone.UTC).toDate()

Use this to avoid nasty time zone issues:
localDate = LocalDate.fromDateFields(myJavaDate);
