His new book, "Behind The Pink Curtain: The Complete History Of Japanese S*x Cinema", is due out shortly from Fab Press. We have edited this essay for length and content. You can read his full, uncut essay using the link above. -- The birth of the Japanese theatrical s*x film genre, known as "pink film" (pinku eiga), can be traced back to the release of Kobayashi Satoru's "Flesh Market" (1962, now lost), when police raided the cinema where the film was playing and confiscated all prints. The resulting scandal was enough to cause an explosion of low-budget films of similarly salacious content, with the number of such releases, initially referred to as eroductions ("er*tic productions"), rising from four in its first year, to an all-time high of 250 titles in 1969, around half Japan's domestic film output. But while the r*pe, t*rture and b*ndage fantasies prevalent during the 70s and 80s suggest that Japan is more tolerant of s*xual violence than most countries, in terms of s*xual expl*citness, they are often milder, mainly due to country's relatively strict screen censorship laws. Consequently, filmmakers are forced to find means of hinting at s*xual activity rather than showing it expl*citly. Roman P*rno, the line of glossy s*x films produced by Nikkatsu Studios between 1971-88, is again something different. The production and exhibition circumstances were far removed from the guerrilla shooting methods of pink filmmakers and the industry's own separate outlet of contracted independent adult theatres. They were produced by a major company with its own studios, professionally-trained staff and most importantly, its own directly-operated network of theatres. Classics of the genre include Noboru Tanaka's "A Woman Called Sada Abe" (1975) and "Watcher In The Attic" (1976), Tatsumi Kumashiro's "The World Of Geisha" (1973) and "The Woman With Red Hair" (1979), and Yasuharu Hasebe's "Assault! Jack The Ripper" (1976). The fact that both pink and Roman P*rno films have been intended for theatrical screening has had a large influence on their form. Theatrical viewers are unable to fast-forward between s*x scenes, so far more attention is paid to plot, acting and directing. To a certain sector of those who make and watch them, they are regarded as a unique form of artistic expression, a genre of low-budget filmmaking in which directors can experiment. Recent directors have embraced the pink film as providing opportunities to realize their ideas--either political, social or philosophical--while working on 35mm with professional crews. Many directors have graduated from this industry to work in mainstream film, including a number of prolific women directors. Just as interesting is the fan scene that has built up around the pink film, a network of both male and female aficionados linked by Internet sites, fanzines, special screenings, and all-night retrospectives in Tokyo's finest art cinemas. To this day, the pink film represents a significant facet of the wider Japanese industry. -- Read Jasper's Full Essay @ HKFlix: http://www.hkflix.com/coupons/n92/?a1 Browse Japanese Erotic Films @ HKFlix http://www.hkflix.com/coupons/n92/?a2 --------------------------------------------------------- MONDO MACABRO NIKKATSU GIVEAWAY http://www.hkflix.com/coupons/n92/?b1 One of our favorite distributors, Mondo Macabro, has announced the October release of two important films from Nikkatsu's catalog of vintage Roman P*rno films.
