a sequel of sorts to child 44. it's the further adventures of the mgb agent/detective leo demidov but is an entirely different type of tale than child 44. leo and his wife are the guardians of zoya and elena the daughters of the farmers whose death leo was responsible for and feels so guilty about. they hope to adopt. the title refers to a speech made in "secret" by khrushchev to put distance between his regime and the things done under stalin. the speech ends being not so secret and is kind of a catalyst for the events related. leo's first case as an mgb agent comes back to haunt him. one of the victims is out of prison and out for revenge, primarily against leo, but all in his line of work under stalin. zoya is kidnapped. in order to saver her leo must free a man from the gulags. in order to do this he must pose as a prisoner. the basic plot revolves around freeing zoya but it's fairly intricate novel plenty of twists and turns and subplots. deceit. violence. interesting characters.
like child 44 better but thought this was very good.
