did you check the glxinfo output? if it says "direct rendering = no" this means 
the software driver is being used instead.
please post the output of the above commands:
   glxinfo | grep direct
   glxinfo | grep OpenGL

I'm sure you already know, but to get hardware accelerated graphics on NVIDIA 
cards, you have to use the proprietary driver from nvidia kmod_nvidia. check 
your distribution's documentation on how to correctly install it.
