I just found the cause of the problem. It seems it was due to a mismatch in
the glibc version. we had just updated to version 2.1 and still had
blackdown jdk for glibc 2.0.

however, now rmic fails when trying to generate stubs, which seems to be a
stability problem with blackdown's jdk (sigh).
