I didn't have to deal with management since I'm an independant developer
and so I just told the customer what I was using. He was pretty happy
using open source anyway (we've got a linux box with PostgreSQL on it).
I've developed a servlet based intranet application for a client. The application
doesn't run as fast as we'd like though. It takes about a second to build a whole
page, and if too many people start hitting it, I fear it may slow down too much.
In order to optimise the application some of the things i have done is to use
session beans to return a structure (hash, vector, array) of data that is really
only read only and cacheing that in the servlet. This speeds things up
a lot. I still use EntityBean but only where we want fresh data for the
user to alter or view.
