Yes, you're right -- I should be doing a cast. Unfortunately, I have also
tried this approach and I get similar results, since it's still coming out
of the JNDI repository as a Reference, not a DataSource (or the
ConnectionManager class that implements DataSource and Referenceable).

I think you should cast directly to DataSource rather than use narrow
since
DataSource is not a remote object.
Use the method shown for EJBs.
