Hi, all!
When I was born, I must have forgotten to pick-up my free copy of
the Java Bean Technology blueprints; life's been an incomprehensible
stuggle ever since. I downloaded JOnAS two days ago but have so far
succeeded only stumbling and banging my way from one dead-end to
another.
I hardly know where to begin. Perhaps with the Installation Guide
(as I've got no further).
I downloaded and unzipped the source code (onto Unix). Fine.
I set JONAS_ROOT to my installation directory and Jonas version
(which was just, "jonas," with no trailing version information, as may
be expected by the example given in the guide as, "jonas-2-1-1").
Then for the first problem. The guide says, "Update your PATH with
$JONAS_ROOT/bin/unix on Unix." But there is no bin directory under my
jonas directory. There's a bin directory under jonas/output, however, so
I toyed with using this. And the guide also says, "If you want to
retrieve easily the jonas commands." Which commands are these? Should I
have used one already?
Next, set of prequired classes. Got 'em, fine. Set the JNDI_HOME in
some config file (though left the IDB and ORACLE settings commented-out,
as I wasn't sure I needed them - I'm certainly not using Oracle).
Then comes the contents of the Jonas distribution, in which I'd
hoped to get an idea of how to run whatever it is I've just loaded. But
one of the few un-hyperlinked entries is, "Executables to run the tools
and the EJB server on Unix;" and this references the bin/unix file that
failed earlier to appear under my jonas directory.
Next we're instructed to set the OBJECTWEB_HOME variable. Fine.
And finally there's the, "Recompiling Jonas from source section," a
task at which I failed spectacularly. My poor compiler scoured the
universe but innumerable classes refused to be found; and it repeatedly
complained that the OBJECTWEB_HOME was undefined (I think I got over
this by hard-coding it into the Makefiles that I eventually founed were
pertinent; I may have wandered far from the propper trail, however, the
auto-generated config and makefiles bewildering me).
And here I am two days later, exhausted, bruised, and despairing. I
did try running the examples (I'm using RMI) and competantly failed
here, too: more AWOL classes. I presumed all the sections on
configuration (JNDI, Jonas, etc.) are only relevant once the source has
compiled.
Well, I've changed so many makefiles and configs at this stage, that
I'm now re-loading it all and starting again.
After this long, pointless moan, I just have two questions, the
second of which is the most important:
1) Did you successfully run this software by following the
installation guide (for UNIX) step-by-step? And,
2) If not, what deviations did you make?
Sorry to have taken your time with this drivel. I'm sure your Java
beans are just hopping and no doubt JOnAS is the best thing since Heinz,
but, as I hinted, I'm an exceptionally dim, little boy.
Yet I would so like to test this product, as I've heard such high
praise of both it and of the fantastically hard-working Evidian. I truly
hope a good, loud, "RTFM!" will suffice.
