Sybase alter table

Hi

    Is there anybody who is able to
    modify the column width in sybase11.0.3.3
    on linux  by using
    ALTER TABLE ABC MODIFY coloumname varchar(50) null
    go.

    I am getting the error ,
    syntax error at modify
