Well, this is not a JOnAS task but a EJB task, but here is the answer:

A J2EE server is running several services (see J2EE spec for the description
of all of them), e. g. WebService (HTTP), AppService (EJB), DatabaseService,
TransactionService, SecurityService etc. Such a server can spread several
services of several machines (bulding a cluster).

JOnAS is not a full J2EE service, but only a subset - it contains all that
is needed to run an AppService (including TX and DatabaseAccess).

A server can contain many containers of same type. A container is an
isolated box. You can have many EJB containers running on the same server.
That makes sense if you think of running several different applications -
each application could use one isolated container, so the beans of every
application does not interfere with the other application.
