The first time I played a Joni album was on a typical Scottish summer day,
of course I was wearing a thick sweater and a look that reflected being AWOL
from high school. At that time my folks were still proud owners of a six
feet long cabinet with WOW! state of the art stereo speakers. Stereo! Ooosh!
The first 7 inch I ever encountered was that belonging to Tom Jones. The
Green Green Grass still seems as green as it was then in 19 sixty mid. Those
were the days when when you wanted to record you had to put a live
microphone up close to the speakers and demand the entire household be
hushed for fear of a distant "Dr Who's coming on!" I digress. When I first
heard Joni on a high school afternoon, well to be honest I can't be sure if
it was C&S or THOSL, but I do remember thinking - oosh! Big Yellow Taxi and
Woodstock aside, both of which which I'd heard in the melee of groaning up
in high school, (the first track, now was it Court and Spark or IFTKOMS?)
sent shivers through me timbers and boy I've been shivered ever since. The
reason I'm writing this is because I'm listening to C&S and it's reminding
me of those daze. Man I wish I were still so impressionable!
