Hi Walt,
Welcome to the Joni Mitchell Discussion List. (JMDL)
The tv special that you mentioned was on the TNT cable network and was
entitled, appropriately, "TNT All-Star Tribute To Joni Mitchell". It's
available as a stereo VHS dub, free. (Write off list for details.) Shawn
Colvin was singing with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Colvin just had another baby
so she's not gay. Shawn did seem to enjoy Mary Chapin's company on stage
that night though. ANYWAY!!
Don't know what small show in LA you're referring to although I'm guessing
the Gene Autry Theater one, but I thought that was in NYC? If she told a
story about being a cowgirl while the boys were Roy Rogers, it was the
Autrey show. There's an audience audio-only of this show.
Or maybe you caught the CBC's Much Music appearance, which was a small show
in downtown Toronto? If the backdrop was a cornfield, and Joni was drinking
saki, it was the Much Music show. This show was built for television so it
seems more likely that you saw this show. There is a wonderful, complete,
widely circulated (for free) video for this performance.
Write again.
